PhD in AI and Computational Pathology
Throughout my career, I have enjoyed applying engineering and technology to new fields. In my PhD, that was clinical pathology: developing AI for prostate cancer diagnosis. Later, it turned to bringing AI innovations through the CE-IVDR medical device regulation. In my free time, it's home automation.

Evolutionary biology → Decentralized computing
In my BSc, I had my first experience with cross-disciplinary work. Learning from vampire bats, I researched whether their approach could work for decentralized resource sharing, e.g., in peer-to-peer networks.

My MSc sparked my interest in IoT and smart homes. If we have all these smart devices in our house, could we use those to autonomously map our home? SLAM from robotics came to the rescue.

Deep learning → Clinical pathology
Can we use AI to improve detection and determining the aggressiveness of prostate cancer? In my PhD, I showed that we can and that AI-human collaboration performed best.

A computer is an educational device, it's in fact a direct reflection of your own imagination, your own intelligence. And once you're given the freedom in which to create things and see the immediate response on the screen, then it becomes a very enjoyable experience, you go on to involve yourself in many other things.
I like to bring technology to new fields, from automating things in my home to modernist cuisine. This (older than me) quote captures that feeling well. Though, we'll have to see how LLMs change this in the future.

A true smart home has always been a dream. While a true Star-Trek-level home might be still far away, recent developments do bring it a little bit closer. I'm a real fan of Home Assistant, and use it to automate a wide range of things.
